MedAmerica Mutual Selects New Chief Financial Officer from MedMal Industry

Christopher P. Mertes To Be MedAmerica Mutual's Chief Financial Officer, Oakland, Calif. (February 24, 2003) - MedAmerica Mutual Risk Retention Group, Inc., specializing in professional liability medical malpractice insurance, announced today that Christopher P. Mertes, former Assistant Controller at NORCAL Mutual Insurance Company, has been appointed as its Chief Financial Officer effective March 10, 2003. Mr. Mertes will work closely with Gloria H. Everett, Chief Executive Officer, on financial strategy, policyholder relations, accounting, and regulatory functions.

Mr. Mertes, with 20 years of finance and management experience, comes to MedAmerica Mutual after 14 years with NORCAL Mutual, where he served as assistant controller since 1997. Previously, Mr. Mertes has held analyst positions with Impell Corporation, MGM/UA Entertainment Company, Dun & Bradstreet, Inc.

Mr. Mertes earned his MBA with honors from St. Mary's College and a BA in Economics from UCLA.
